On printing: choosing the right fine art paper for Burren landscapes
Landing here? This was posted in the Burren Stories & Articles, a section of The Burren Light & Land Irish landscape photography project.
A print has to be the most artistic representation of an image captured with a camera: the 'end game' that brings your photography to the next level. An object you can touch and feel, which interacts differently with light, whether it is matte, pearl or pure gloss. It can also have beautiful textures giving the image a totally different feel, depth and look. Some papers are hand made which allow for a multitude of results.
I experimented with many different papers on my A3+ printer and, through trial and errors, ended up selecting two fine art papers for prints: the Hahnemule Cotton Rag Ultra Smooth 305gsm, the Canson Infinity Arches BFK Rives pure white 310 gsm.
Both papers are pure cotton rag, offering archival quality without any wood pulp (no yellowing over time). They are thick, artwork feel papers with excellent colour reproduction and tonal subtlety. Once is ultra smooth whereas the other one has a very delicate texture. There is also another more 'niche' rice paper of very japanese look and feel, which is suitable only for very few selected images: the Hahnemule Rice Rice Paper smooth 110 gsm.
What follows is a small, carefully chosen collection of fine art papers, each selected for its unique ability to complement a different kind of landscape and mood.

Where a photograph relies on clarity, balance, and fine detail, a smoother surface is often the best option to get its best representation.
The main reasons why I choose Hahnemühle Photo Rag 308 Ultra Smooth for some of my photography:
- Ideal for clean, minimalist landscapes – This paper shines with compositions that rely on simplicity, strong structure, and negative space: seascapes, clear skies, long exposures, and refined scenes where clarity and balance are key.
- Ultra-smooth matte surface – With virtually no visible texture, it allows the image to take full control, delivering a crisp, modern presentation with exceptional sharpness. Warm off-white base – Its subtle warmth gently softens the image, making it particularly flattering for neutral tones, skin-like textures in nature (stone, sand), and calming colour palettes.
- Superb detail and sharpness – Fine lines, distant elements, and delicate transitions are rendered with precision, making it ideal for high-resolution landscape work. No optical brighteners – The natural base tone is achieved without artificial whitening agents, ensuring long-term stability and a consistent, authentic look over time. Museum-grade archival quality – Made from 100% cotton and acid-free, it offers excellent longevity for collectors and fine art presentation.
- Versatile for colour and black & white – Particularly effective where subtle warmth enhances mood—think soft coastal light, gentle sunsets, and intimate landscape details.
Overall, Hahnemühle Photo Rag 308 Ultra Smooth is perfect for buyers and collectors seeking a refined, contemporary finish—where precision meets softness, and the warmth of the paper enhances the mood of the scene.

For images built on atmosphere, texture, and depth, I turn to a paper that brings a natural softness and presence to the scene.
This is where this beautifully textured Canson fine art matte paper comes into play! The main reasons why I choose the Canson BFK Rives Pure white for some of my photography:
- Ideal for subtle, atmospheric landscapes – This paper excels with images that rely on mood rather than punch: soft light, misty mornings, layered hills and subtle tonal transitions where detail reveals itself.
- Exceptional tonal depth – This amazing paper renders both deep shadows and delicate highlights with remarkable subtlety, allowing fine textures and transitions to breathe naturally.
- Soft, natural matte finish – The gentle texture adds a tactile, almost painterly quality without distracting from the image, enhancing the emotional presence of the scene.
- Pure white base without optical brighteners – Free from artificial whitening chemicals, it delivers a clean, stable white that won’t shift over time, preserving the integrity of the print.
- Museum-grade longevity – Made from 100% cotton and acid-free, ensuring archival quality and long-term durability.
- Beautiful for both colour and monochrome – Particularly well suited to restrained colour palettes and black-and-white work where nuance and gradation are key.
Overall, the Canson Infinity BFK Rives Pure White is best paired with landscapes images built on atmosphere, texture, and quiet light—where its understated elegance can truly shine.
The Hahnemühle Photo Rice Paper 110gsm

For a small number of images—those that embrace simplicity and space—the paper itself becomes part of the artwork.
I just love this very delicate Rice Paper provided by Hahnemühle. Thick enough to not be too translucent, easier to frame. A few more reasons why I choose this paper for some very selective photography:
- I reserve this paper for highly selective, minimalist images – This paper only works when the subject is simple and intentional: delicate branches, soft horizons, negative space, and compositions that embrace restraint. Busy, dark or highly detailed scenes will quickly overwhelm it.
- Extremely soft, fibrous texture – The visible fibres and organic structure become part of the artwork itself, creating a unique, almost ethereal rendering that feels closer to a drawing or traditional Japanese print.
- Lightweight and translucent character – At 110gsm, it has a fragile, airy presence that enhances images with a sense of lightness, silence, and impermanence.
- Gentle tonal rendering – Contrast is naturally softened, making it ideal for subtle transitions, muted palettes, and atmospheric scenes rather than bold, high-impact images.
- Natural white base without optical brighteners – Free from whitening chemicals, the paper maintains a soft, authentic tone that remains stable over time.
- Archival quality – Made from high-quality natural fibres, ensuring longevity when handled and framed appropriately.
- A true fine art statement! This is not a general-purpose paper; it’s a deliberate artistic choice, best used when the material itself is part of the story.
Overall, Hahnemühle Photo Rice Paper 110 is for images where simplicity, space, and emotion take precedence. Where the paper itself becomes an integral part of the visual experience.
Choosing the right paper pairing makes a big difference in the final impression of an image, the one you will be purchasing. Most photographs will be printed on either an Hahnemühle Cotton Rag (smooth paper) or a Canson BFK Rives paper (more textured, whiter paper), depending on what suits them best. When Rice paper is used or available, it will be mentioned.
